Owlets is our nursery class taught by the class teacher, Mrs Lockwood with support from our nursery nurse, Miss Black.
Our morning sessions begin at 8.50am and end at 11.50am.
In each morning session, the children receive two carpet inputs that focus on communication, language or mathematics. Input activities also include phonics, music and personal, social and emotional. We have weekly mindfulness sessions on Mondays and singing from Mr White on Tuesdays. Each carpet session lasts between 10-20 minutes and this can involve children working as a whole class, in small groups or with their Kagan partners. At Hillside we love reading. We believe it is essential to our children's learning as it helps them to develop language skills and increases their knowledge of the world around them. Stories are read frequently throughout the morning session so the children are exposed to a wide range of texts and authors. Weekly nursery rhymes are also sent home for the children and parents to share at home.
At Hillside, we follow a topic based curriculum. Throughout the morning, children are able to explore the nursery learning environment, both indoors and outdoors to engage in child initiated play. We also take our learning beyond the nursery environment and into the schools extensive grounds and woodland. Forest school sessions are scheduled in with Mr Spencer throughout the year and the children join in with lots of gardening with Mr Bass, our school gardener.
